Emil and Eva were married in Javornik in 1958.
Emil started working as a mechanizátor.

Emil began working for State Forest Research & Development. His first task was to renovate a workshop in Brno.

Emil was then hired as an Assistant Professor with the Forestry Faculty in Brno.

In his spare time he began flight training in a Zlin aircraft
Shortly after take-off during a training flight with his instructor the aircraft suffered an engine failure and crash landed in a field. The instructor panicked and ran away leaving Emil trapped inside. Luckily, a young lady who was visiting her boyfriend along the fence of a nearby military base saw the crash and brought help. Emil was freed with only minor injuries. He continued flight training with a different instructor.
In July 1968 Emil's dream of visiting Canada came true when he was granted a 6 month study visa. He loaded his beloved 1928 Tatra 12 Kabriolet with a suitcase full of books, salami, and beer, along with his shotgun and $40 and sailed on a ship carrying grain to Baie-Como in Quebec.

During his stay in Canada the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia.
Emil was able to arrange for Eva and Susana to join him in Canada.
